  • Southampton beat Everton 2-0 in February - and are looking to pick up consecutive Premier League victories against them for the first time since December 2014.

  • Everton have lost seven of their past nine away league games against Southampton (W2), more than they had in their previous 22 such visits to Saints (W8 D8 L6).

  • Everton are currently enjoying their longest unbeaten spell in the league under Frank Lampard (5 games –W1 D4); their longest such run since December 2020 (W4 D1).

  • Southampton recorded their first home league win of the season in their last such game against Chelsea (2-1), and could record successive league victories at St Mary’s for the first time since February, when they beat both Everton and Norwich 2-0.

  • Southampton have conceded the opening goal of a game in more league games than any other side this season (6), each of which has come in the past six fixtures in the competition.

Difficult game to call. Southampton have had quite variable performances this season so far and the international break will have interrupted the momentum for both teams. We are looking hard to beat, have had another 2 weeks to integrate the new guys, get DCL and Pickford back and work out how we are going to manage without Patterson for a month or so.

I think we need a smash and grab away performance here. Concentrate on not losing for the first hour, nick a goal, then close up shop. And I think Frank now has the tactical nous to set us up for that and that we have the players to execute it. Exciting times once again.

Poor first half from both sides. We looked slightly more dangerous but just too sloppy both in terms of our passing and first touch to create direct chances. Iwobi made us go, though I thought even he looked a bit sloppier than usual.

When McNeil was able to get space I thought he put a couple very nice balls in. That said, his lack of pace was clear that half as he had a tough time gaining the space to get comfortable on the ball. Would like to see Gordon on sooner than later.

McNeil just doesn't seem to be very good. Early days I know but he just doesn't seem to really have any confidence. Plus he is one of the most 1-footed players I've seen in a long time.

Gordon needs to come on for him or DG. Otherwise we seem comfortable. Boringly so.
