sounds great! second only to kante in interceptions and in tackles (4.1 a match). 7.2m, sounds great at 26 years old.

Don't see the point to this unless he doesn't rate at least two of McCarthy, Barry, Gibson, and Besic and wants to move them on. Doesn't seem like a major upgrade on any of them, unless I'm mistaken.

mccarthy and barry have been missing from all our preseason matches and they 're not injured. i don't think he rates them.

After snooping around a few forums lots and lots of villa fans seem to think he's an below average player just with amazing stats, and not many disagree.

If we're looking for a ball winning type midfielder we have Macca and Besic.

Edit: Sky Sports Sources say we've met his release clause.

Yep -- general consensus seems to be that he lost the ball a lot and had to recover.

Basically... when you're playing for the worst team in the league you're expected to be exposed to the defensive side of the game more.

Roy Keane was relegated just before signing for man united.

Carrick was relegated before signing for spurs.

exactly, i'm excited by this signing. cheap price, low cost massive room for growth and potential. again 7.2m is Arouna Kone injured for 2 years 5 goals over 3 years money. I think he will prove to be a better player than that.

Why do we always end up with Fodder? I haven't the slightest clue how good this fella is but it ain't looking good atm

This is unfair you say yourself you haven't got a clue about him.

The problem is we have to get body's in as it stands now we will struggle to get out the bottom half of the table,he actually looks decent.

Hmmm, this seems like Walsh's first move for koeman? I think we should give Steve the innocent until proven guilty approach, based on his success last season. He did sign the player of the year for a pittance. And this lad was surrounded by rubbish players at villa. Add the stats he has (not big on stats) but anyone with those numbers surely has a place in most prem squads? Coached by one of the best defenders ever... Would like to see what he can achieve for no more then the quoted 7m

Didn't Niasse have good stats???

These are premier league stats; non-comparable to Niasse's in Russia.

Could be a plucky signing... he was involved in pretty much anything good Villa did last season and there wasn't a lot of that. Seems he can pick a pass as well as the energy and defensive duties.

Reckon this is the sign of things to come from Walsh, this is exactly the sort of signing he's made his name from. Given his track record, I'm backing him.

Personally I think the only way we'll go 'big name' is if/when Lukaku/Stones leave, with perhaps a Mata type signing as a bonus. The reality is we're currently a mid-table club with no European football to offer, we have to box clever to get ourselves in a position to attract 'bigger' names. Notice how everyone we're linked with is also linked to Chelsea, City and Man Utd? Wonder where they'll end up going?

If Koeman and Walsh reckon this lad can improve us, great. Now bring in a keeper please and let's start getting excited for the new season.

If the Villa fans don't rate him then it's a no from me.

The bar of expectation is higher now so expect steak........yet we seem to be ordering spam.

Second the Russian League comment. And Niasse's stats weren't even that incredible; they were just better than average.

I don't know when Aston Villa fans became the moderators of good, but yeah, I'd rather trust a guy who just won a title at Leicester with 22 million pounds in his starting 11 than a bunch of fans who hate everyone in a squad that was just relegated for the first time in nearly 30 years.

Can't say I'd noticed him before, but at least he looks good on Youtube. He'd add athleticism to the squad at least, much better acceleration than McCarthy and Barry.

Players who do this type of job just don't stand out unless you are really watching the game - is anyone telling me that they really watched Villa?

Villa fans watch villa and they're convinced he's an average player. Nobody was singing his praises.

He will have more interceptions etc than most , Villa got absolutely twatted almost every single game, if they wsre on average having 60 attacks a game against them compared to say Leicester averaging 30 he's bound to have more interceptions etc.

Stats are bollocks they can be twisted and made to look however you want them to.

Villa had 47% or 48% possession last year depending on where you look.

I imagine they Walsh & Koeman have been watching him for a while. Stats can be looked at both ways, Villa were terrible that's a fact but the interceptions, tackles, blocks etc still have to be made and it seems he put a shift in.

Leicester averaged 44.8% possession vs Villa 47.3% - Leicester had the second lowest pass completion in the league.

Its fair to say that both players have had a similar job to do from a tackling perspective.

He's supposed to have joined Villa for £9mill...but his release clause is £7.2mill?!

And you think our club is bad!!!

Relegation release clause, though. Basically says: "I'm joining you, but with major reservations. So, should the club go down, I'm getting my ass out of here and you can't stop me. So, if you still want me, put this in (in agent speak)."

Basically Villa couldn't have signed an in-demand player like him without the clause.

Yeah. It's still lunacy to put it in for less than what was paid. Allegedly (!!!!).

i don't think it's lunacy at all. he wants out if they're relegated, a high price tag will mean he's stuck, a low one will mean plenty will come in for him. makes complete sense to me.

Hasn't he be injured for City most of the season? He was very good at Villa.

Delph? 3 goals and 6 assists in 5 years at Villa... but he fouled loads of players so they thought he wore the shirt with pride.

I used to think he was shite until he played against us for City at Goodison. He was immense. Underrated player

He speaks sense does collymore here... Mccarthy was relegated from Wigan came to us and was arguably player of the year and looked class till the repeated hamstring injuries.

£7m is absolute peanuts in today's market.
