Hopefully this will be the end for Southgate; for me, given the quality at his disposal, we've looked half decent in the last few years despite him, rather than because of him.

Imagine a Guardiola having that squad for example, we'd have trophies in the cabinet.

I’m hoping for that too but feel pretty sure we’ll be stuck with him until after the next Euro’s.

For all the quality attacking players we have, all we did was huff and puff. Our best chance (pens aside - which was shocking French defending) was a Maguire header from a set piece (also shocking French defending).

I think that is probably the best we have played in a big game but I think we were second best on the night and as the French showed when it went to 1-1 they had gears to go through and it was probably more of a case of them taking their foot off the gas that made us look better than we really were.

Almost all of this squad will still be around for the Euros (Walker/Henderson/Trippier aside) so we do get to have another crack at it but I feel like Kane will be on his way out by the next World Cup and he will be tough to replace.

I have no idea who is winning this though, Croatia and Morocco have shown themselves to be really tough to beat whereas Argentina and France both have the quality to break both sides down. I feel like Argentina are probably the most balanced side, whereas France are probably the most potent. Croatia seem to be the most battle hardened team, and Morocco are probably the team most neutrals want to win!

Bailey, I don’t think they went up any gears at 1-1 at all. We were still well on top and then gifted them a goal with some shoddy defending.

I thought over the whole game we were the better side. Which I was surprised about after how badly we’d played in that first half.

But, if you don’t make the most of being in charge of the game and score more than the opposition then you don’t deserve to win. It’s as simple as that.

Saw this last might. I can’t believe it. It will be pretty wild if it turns out to be foul play.

He mentioned in his podcast the day before that he was under the weather but also felt like he was coming out of the other side of it.

It’s too early to know, but either way it’s tragic. He did such excellent work and seemed like an incredible person.

Truly. He really was a pioneer when it comes to covering the sport here in the states. I was really stunned when I saw it.

Time for a game of World Cup bingo:

England miss a penalty and get knocked out

England snatch defeat from the jaws of victory

“It’s the ref’s fault”

“England deserved to win”

France win!

BINGO!!

The funny thing is, I'd thought to post this message 24 hours ago, before kickoff, but then I thought twice about it given how full of hope everyone must be. Why should I burst their bubble? If I'd had the courage, though, it would make it even more funny.

I disagree, they forced a save from Pickford immediately from kick off. Giroud then stepped over when he could have got a shot away deep inside our 18 yard box and Pickford made another save from Giroud square in front of goal, not far out. Then they scored.

IMO that was them shifting in attitude from a cagey hang on to a lead way of playing to, lets buck our ideas up and win this. The gap between the equaliser and the winner was probably Frances best period of creating chances.

My view is that you are only in charge of a game if you are creating chances and opportunities to go with it. At no point did we really look like a goal was coming for all that we retained the ball better than we normally do.

God this breaks my heart. I genuinely haven't been stunned by a public figure's death like this in quite some time, especially considering the timing of it.

Same here. I knew he was pretty well-liked, but I had no idea the impact he had on so many people personally.

Should be on stage Steve, lung splitting banter.

Time for a new manager.  One, I can’t stand the media backing him.  He’s done “alright” to decent…. They are making out he’s taken a minnows squad to the latter stages.

but I’m sorry, that squad of players is very very strong and should be doing better. The reality is most top managers in the business would love to manage England cos they are that strong.

The question if Southgate is going to go, is who replaces him?

I think that Southgate is tactically naive and overly negative despite the quality of the attacking players he has, but a lot of national team managers leave a lot to be desired.

Do you stick with a guy who will more often than not get us deep into a tournament only to fail when the games get tough, only to maybe fall over the line a bit like we almost did against Italy. Or do you go in a different direction and go for someone where it could backfire and set us back a few years again like we did with Capello, McLaren, Allardyce, Hodgson etc?

I think we need to do everything we can with this group of players as there is no guarantee this amount of quality will come around again.
