Serena Williams, what a bad loser; the ultimate "do you know who I am?" personality. Total lack of sportsmanship and completely spoiled the occasion for the Japanese lass who beat her, the crowd were dreadful also.

Can’t stand her personally because of this. Still whinging in her press conference about not being able to express her emotions on the court. When those “emotions” have included threatening linesmen in the past, I’m glad a chair umpire has finally stood up to her.

I can't stand her and I love it when she loses. Particularly at the US Open. The whole tournament is spoken about like she's already won it, and total disrespect is shown to all opponents of hers there. So it is so enjoyable when she falls flat on her face.

A few years ago she was going for the 'Serena Slam' and loads of fans had bought tickets for the final so they could watch her do it. She didn't even get to the final... it was pure gold

Can't wait until the queen of arrogance retires.

Horrible piece of work. "Sexism" my arse.... she's earned a fookin fortune out of best of 3 sets whilst men have 5 set -  4 hour plus marathons which leave them exhausted when playing their next singles game.  FOR THE SAME MONEY!!  meanwhile she pads up her earning having nice little warmdowns in the doubles matches.

I hope the umpire sues her arse.

I hope a male player comes out and says they want more money based on the extra sets and extra attendance they get.

Oh yeah.... has she ever had her natural testosterone levels checked too? Caster Semanya has been through all sorts of shit cos she has naturally high testosterone levels.... I guess Serena does too based on her 15 inch biceps.

And this is apparently racist and sexist now...

yeah totally racist, she didn't play a blond white chick and the ref was not a pale skinned guy, he is portuguese and has tan skin.  so the cartoonist making that juxtaposition is racist, not sure on the sexist bit.

It's caricature, the ethnicity of the extras is irrelevant for me. You want to find something about the crowd being grey offensive?

Edit: actually the ethnicity and gender of all three characters isn'tttt the point surely, how many cartoons were there of McEnroe spitting the dummy back in the day? Were they racist because he was white or sexist because he was male? Of course they weren't, there's enough real prejudice in the World so no need to see it when it's not there.

Not sure what to make of the Keane thing. Apparently Ward wasn't even there when it happened so he will have second hand information which makes it even less reliable. The stuff between Keane and Walters sounds realistic but the Keane and Arter thing seems OTT even for Keane.

The thing is Keane knows fully well that these lads will be on the treatment table during the international break and then playing 90 minutes in the first team at the weekend which must be infuriating for them although I would happy to see all the Everton lads on the treatment table on international duty if it meant they were fit for the weekend!

you're missing it mike.  the caricature portrayed serena as black (correct) and being in the wrong, then portrayed the right as being white and white (both incorrect).  they in itself is a message hence the racism (black wrong white right).  had they been the correct skin color i doubt the racism calls would be there.

grey would probably be accurate for teh crowd, a mixture of many different peoples of all colors, grey actually be the color of them combined in a "one big audience" thing.

It's not conclusively racist. As a caricuture it's pretty accurate in its exaggeration.... im not sure the other player and umpire are supposed to be caricatures.

The sad reality is that a caricature of a black person is going to identify a lot of school yard jibes... colour, prominent lips,  musculature etc. A caricature of Federer would show a big nose... boris Becker ginger etc etc

I hadn't actually noticed the race of the umpire and other player!

FWIW the other player does look Asian and the umpire is white in real life, albeit a tanned white.

I can see why people are raising their eyebrows at it but it feels like you have to look for it to see. Then again it's an issue that has never affected me in my life and therefore it might well be more emotive and repugnant to others.

It's just easier to draw white people. In most the Japanese cartoons the people look more white than Asian.

I'd imagine most cartoon artist will draw a generic character with white features simply because it's easier.

I take MJB's point, and the US is very sensitive to things like this. Williams' opponent is half-Japanese and half-Haitian, most definitely neither light-skinned nor blonde.

And for MikeO's benefit, I'm upset because the cartoonist had to make the spectators fifty shades of grey. There's no place for pornography in sports. :shakingfist:

I don't really have a dog in this fight because I couldn't give a shit about tennis, but the whole thing does seem a bit sexist, and the cartoon is definitely reminiscent of overtly racist Jim Crow/Jack Johnson cartoons.

The sexist part is evinced by this:

There's just a much larger reaction to and outrage over her fits than there ever has been to the tantrums of male tennis players.

John McEnroe is himself a caricature, but as polarizing as he was, few said he was disgracing the sport. People equally loved or hated his lack of decorum, but it was entertainment and he was seen as a passionate if irritating figure.

When Williams throws a fit, no one finds it entertaining. Her fits will never be in a reel of tennis players behaving badly. Instead they will be dissected by every sports publication and most non-sports publications, talked about in soccer forums and at dinner tables. If you can’t see the difference between the two, I can’t help you:

So yeah, Johnny boy, I’m serious.

I’m not sure for whose benefit that article was posted (your only other post about this talks about how much you hate Williams), but if you read the whole thing, it actually defends my point.

So a man is punished heavily (and quite rightly so as well), while I woman was punished less heavily (also rightly, because her offence was less), but for some reason people think Williams’ punishment was sexist... Nope, not having it. It’s just Serena playing the sore loser card, as she’s prone to do because she’s a big baby.

Great tennis player but an absolute horror of a person.
