Then I remembered the players at his disposal for Belgium and what he'd have to work with here. Be like downgrading from a mansion in Beverly Hills to a mobile home in Tallahassee. Denmark outplayed them for most of the game I thought, two moments of quality got them the win though. If they put in a first half performance like that against France, Germany, Portugal or (whisper it) England they're 3/4 down and out of it. I love Martinez and a small part of me wants to see him given another chance here. That said, Belgium are arguably the most stacked team behind France. If they don't at least make it to the Semis then I'd see that as a failure, and their defensive issues will keep them from getting there IMO. Bailey
That didnt go as planned. I said before the tournament it was all about balance, especially in those attacking positions, and Southgate doesn't have a clue! Imagine substituting Foden too. Zoo 2.0
What the fuck did I do in a previous life to support two teams that absolutely shit the bed against their rivals? Fuck me. We were arguably shit against Croatia after a bright start and it was a carbon copy tonight, Stones hits the post, Mount goes close and then we just do the square root of fuck all for the other 80 minutes. The fact that Sterling managed to just dawdle his way through the game without being brought off genuinely made me question whether or not to launch the remote through my TV - shouldn't play again this tournament. I actually wanted Southgate when the job was vacant and will be always grateful for that unforgettable World Cup but he needs to be seriously questioned tonight. Scotland, without sounding patronising are a team that you'd argue how many we'd put past as opposed to actually just beating them, tonight feels similar (if a tiny bit better) than the time we absolutely shit the bed against Iceland. We just seem to have a proper 90 minute shitshow in us regardless of who we have on the pitch or what tournament we're in. It's actually made me not that arsed about the rest of the competition as whether we win, lose or draw against the Czechs we're being absolutely pummelled by Germany, France or Portugal. 11 minutes ago, Hafnia said: Southgate is just like Moyes isn't he. Yup. 9 minutes ago, Bailey said: Imagine substituting Foden too. Just next level incompetence that. The only player in a white shirt that actually had some spark about them, the only player thats main attributes are weaving in and out of a crowded penalty area and he whips him off. I can't stress enough how much of a complete shitshow I think tonight was, it got to around the 75th minute when I wasn't that bothered if we'd make it 1-0, the embarrassment was already there - same as when Sterling embarrassingly went down for that penalty, really not arsed that we didn't get it. Popular Post Romey 1878
Remember when we thought Southgate wouldn't just pick favourites? That seems a long time ago now. How the fuck did Sterling play the whole game?! He was shite against Croatia apart from his goal as well. It's not hard to see why he figured a lot less for City last season and he should not be getting the favouritism he's getting for England. Especially not at the expense of Foden who looked quality for City on the left. Two holding players for the whole game and then playing the last 15 minutes without a striker was a bit shit as well. Arguably, you could say we played the whole game without a striker because Kane was absolutely fucking useless, just like he was against Croatia. Lots of problems with this England side but the biggest one is the manager. We'll never do anything with such a fearful man. Popular Post Bailey
I think you can look at both performances and question the squad he picked to start with. The Croatia game got quite a lot of hype but it wasn't much different today. I don't understand why the likes of Neville were so happy with Sunday's game but were pissing and moaning about today. At least Souness, the cock that he is, saw through the mediocrity of the Croatia game. The squad is confused. When the manager picks 4 right backs, plays one at left back and talks about them playing in midfield it should set off an alarm bell. Taking Sterling, Rashford, Grealish and Foden who are all best from the left hand side and then playing the most out of form one (Sterling) in that position is another alarm bell. Not playing a single player who is comfortable or at their best on the right wing is another worry. The one man who can play right wing is that sat on the bench all game. I am not the hugest Sancho fan on what I have seen of him but he scores and create goals in Germany. If you need to stretch the game and score a goal, why does he not get on the pitch? The midfield is also confusing. Phillips got a lot of praise last week and he did some real quality at times, but there was also a lot of pointless passes, not moving the ball with any purpose and today too much of it went backwards when a forward pass was on. I also don't get why he is being forced forward. If you want to play with someone who can break forward, play a creative player like Mount in that position. Rice, who does at least try and commit a player before he passes was almost always going side to side. I watched John Stones try and draw more players out of position with his passing that either one of those two midfielders. At the back Mings is just such a hesitant player. He always wants to drop deep and Scotland peeled off him time and time again to find space, especially in that first half. They made Adams look like a world beater. Whoever plays alongside Stones needs to be dominant but for a big lad Mings is a pussy cat. The distance between the back line, Rice and then the rest of the team was huge today. A bit like Belgium last night, you could see a decent side cutting through time and time again. The striker position is a problem too. I didn't see Kane genuinely challenge an aerial ball all game. He tried to "manouevre" the defender almost every time. Just win the thing. When you are playing with two players cutting inside on their strong foot you can't then have a fairly immobile striker clogging up the area they want to move into. He needs to be on the last line, pushing the defence back and creating space. I might not be the biggest DCL fan on this site, but the one guy in that squad that will challenge every ball and has the pace and power to push teams back is Dom and yet he gets splinters whilst Mr MBE comes on up front ahead of him. This is a guy that is at his best playing from the left and who quite frankly is in pretty terrible form coming into this tournament. All Southgate needs to do is keep it simple and if he does that England will do well in this tournament. He just needs to stop thinking that he is some kind of English Pep Guardiola. chicagoblue, Romey 1878, Zoo 2.0 and 2 others
chicagoblue
I give no ducks about England but … what in the blue blazes is Garrth doing? Kane is clearly not fit. The announcers on Canadian tv saw that from the 15th minute. two holding midfielders when you’ve got 70% possession? sterling, well it’s been said here already. then the subs. Kane comes off when England is fully dominating. Can put in crosses at will. Scotland sitting deep. No room in behind. Who’s the man of the hour, the guy who runs in behind. Wtf. At half I and everyone at the pub was calling for dom and crosses but instead it’s backwards sideways backwards sideways. If England win another game this tournament it will be in spite of everything they’re doing to lose. Incredible stuff.

StevO
So much attacking talent in the squad and he hasn’t got a clue how to use them. It took Southgate too long to get Grealish in the England squad in the first place, and even now he doesn’t know how to use him. Doesn’t know how to use Kane, why he’s getting so deep is beyond me. He’s dropping deep like he’s got Son making runs, but he’s not got that. When you see the way Italy, France, Belgium and Holland are scoring goals we aren’t even a contender. Getting out of the group is enough of a struggle. Romey 1878 and Palfy

dunlopp9987
After their performance against France and through the first 30 minutes against Portugal, Germany looked like a shell of themselves. That turned around quickly. Havertz looking like a world beater out there, and Gosens impressing as well.
