I put no weight whatsoever in quotations when English is not a player's first language. It's so easy to spin what's said out of all proportion. Using 'they instead of 'we'? I'm not a Spanish speaker, but I wouldn't be surprised at all to learn it's a cultural issue. English is such a weird language with so many nuances we take for granted.

He was speaking in Spanish when he said it not English, now you know that how do you stand.

James didnt want to be at Everton. His comments and actions both showed that. Any speculation on what the club or Benitez want is ultimately irrelevant because the player has absolutely checked out once Carlo left. Nobody is bigger than the club.

Exactly.

The likes of Deulofeu still got a cheer when he came to Goodison. Not because he worked his arse off, because he was often lazy, but because he could produce a bit of magic.

To answer you direct question; I think James put the same effort in for Everton as he did at Real and at Bayern. I didn’t see him play for any of his other clubs before that. He’s a luxury, he always has been. But his moments of quality have always outweighed his lack of defensive ability. When he has been a success is when his team have made the most of that (such as at Everton at the start of last season when Coleman and Doucoure protected him). The biggest difference from James playing for us and for some of his other clubs is that they will accept having a luxury player in their teams, they are often used to it. Half of our fans won’t accept it and that’s fine. Some will always want to see 11 players bust a gut for the club, some will accept 8 or 9 busting a gut and the other two or three win us the game. We all have different ideas of how we would like the team to play.
The only thing that surprises me when fans say that James should work harder or do more defensive work. He never has been that player and that isn’t the player we bought.
Finally, it’s a shame we never got to see him in the flesh in front of a full Goodison. If there was a crowd in when we saw what he could do last season it would have been great. But it is what it is now, and feels like a missed opportunity to me.

My sentiments exactly. Truly world-class players don't need to waste their time and energy on providing defensive cover, for example; they focus on what they do better than just about anyone else in the world. Why expect one of the most insightful and brilliant passers of the ball to rush back to defend? That's like asking Bill Gates to chip in to make the tea when needed. What a waste!

And if James is not motivated, it's because he's not managed well. We saw that Ancelotti lost the desire to manage sometime in the middle of last season. A good manager, though, would do whatever it takes to encourage, inspire, and get the most out of world-class talent. This is why I blame Benitez: He doesn't like James and has no desire to put in the effort. As a result, we're going to lose a player of immense talent. Shame on us.

And one more thing... I'm reading all this talk about James' salary. Let's assume it's $250K a week, which is $1m a month. That means we've signed one of the world's top players for $12m/year! That's phenomenal. What matters is outlay per year versus what they can deliver per year. James' assists last year, alone, meant we avoided a relegation battle toward the end of the season. He delivers - but in his unique way.

$12m. How much did we pay for Sigurdsson again?

A guaranteed way to lose a dressing room is to have a player on £1m a month who tells the coach he's too tired to play.  Very much lose the collective

Richarlison commented “😳” on the Everton Instagram post announcing James had moved on. I think this could cause a stir within the squad to be honest.

I've worked alongside people who earn multiple times what I earn, but I recognize that they deserve it. As others have said above, money shouldn't be the only driver - and that works both ways.

He just oozes quality and confidence in what HE does and how HE plays the game. He's not going to dribble and accelerate with the ball, he's not going to bust a gut winning back possession - and is never going to, but he just consistently puts it on a sixpence when he passes that ball around the park.

On 20/09/2020 at 03:24, Hafnia said:

Zero sprints in 75 minutes.... Get rid!

In all seriousness it goes to show how he operates... He moves so intelligently dropping into pockets.   If you have 2 banks of 4 he is the man, the opponents either have to break the banks by getting someone to manmark him ... In which case it gives us one less man to mark the front 3 - but if they don't he will get the ball of our midfield 3 and pick passes like we seen him do.

Quality quality player.

Just the same I hope, like you rightly said he’s not gonna bust a gut trying to win the ball back, in many ways he’s a luxury player that you give the ball to then watch the magic happen.

One thing I am surprised about is that he works to get the ball back if he loses it. That’s a quality that can only be described as hunger.

James Rodriguez is a galactico .... Hes not been let go cos he's old, injured, crap....  He's been let go because Real have a manager who just doesn't like certain types of players who are specialists and require formation changes/tactical changes to get the best from him.

At Everton we can give him that.

On 28/09/2020 at 05:09, FairWooney said:

The vision and execution in his passing is second to none and the difference it makes to the team is  huge.  He doesn't need to run around or take people on as the his team mates know that when he gets the ball they can start making runs and he will pick them out.  Richarlison as someone that loves to make those kind of runs must love playing with him.  Even the likes of Seamus and Digne see the benefit as they can confidently make those runs up the flanks without feeling it'll be a wasted journey.

When the ball gets played to him it's like the game slows down as he plays at his own pace but around him everything is happening as opposition players try to deal with what is to come.

The way he controls things without dashing around is reminiscent of Pirlo who stroked the ball around like an artist with his brush.

He is what he is. He is never going be a hard working player unless an opponent is standing on him.

But I would say that for the most part, when he had the ball he looked like he could create things. He did put in a few sublime balls that didn’t end up as anything, more because of decisions from others than himself.

We need him on the pitch as he can create in a second. We don’t have others that can do that.  What’s more important is putting the right players around him.

I know it’s a bit of a cop out stat but I think he’s leading Europe for “second assists”. He finds the right pass often. Defensively though, I don’t need to see him snapping into challenges, an extra 10% on cutting down passing lanes and that would make a massive difference.

Allan was the signing Everton desperately needed by James Rodriguez's move from Real Madrid to Goodison Park was certainly the most eye-catching. In fact, it's arguably one of the most remarkable transfers in Premier League history. Rodriguez was an instant hit with the Everton fans and has six goal involvements in his first 10 league appearances. Of players to have started more than five league games this season, only Kevin De Bruyne (one every 101.2 minutes) is creating a clear-cut opportunity more frequently than Rodriguez (every 120.7 mins).

He’s gone of his own free will he hasn’t been pushed out he walked out, he’s gone to a very poor league for one thing the money that would appear more important to him than the football, he could have gone to Porto the team he dreamed of going back to but he wasn’t prepared to negotiate on the money, someone with a reputed 65 million who would give up his dream because he wouldn’t accept somewhere in the region of 50k a week. I don’t think any on here is doubting he had quality but he wanted to leave and he’s got what he wanted and kept his money at the same time and now he’s just history.

From those at the top, right down to a lot of the fans, the lack of ambition is there in my opinion. Even what were the most ambitious of our fans have been beaten down into shrugging their shoulders at the latest fuck ups.

Apart from the new stadium there’s not a lot to feel especially positive about (at least for me). And people seem to think that stadium will fix everything as well. It really won’t. We’ll just be doing the shame shit in a different place unless we get really serious.

We’ve been going around in the same circle since we made the FA cup final for me. Build a team with 5-7 quality players, let a few of them go, we all justify why we are going to be better off, sign a handful of players, most end up shit, rinse and repeat

On 25/01/2021 at 04:50, FairWooney said:

He's not in the team to run around, Carlo bought him as a luxury player who will create chances and that's what he's there to do.  He doesn't put in the most effort chasing back and that's partly why i'd prefer to see him as a number 10 rather than on the wing.  Not only would this give him more involvement in the game but it would also take some responsibility off of defending as the central area has a lot more cover than the wing.

On 25/01/2021 at 05:35, FairWooney said:

James had more passes than anyone apart from Doucoure last night, unusual as usually the most passes are the centre backs of centre mids for us.  81 passes.

Only 3rd (equal) most accurate passes then he's trying to do a bit more with it than Doucoure or Holgate!  69 out of 81 isn't bad going considering some of the passes he played!  Such as the 8 key passes! (out of 15 total for the team)

On 25/01/2021 at 14:07, RuffRob said:

For sure James isn't particularly effective when we are without the ball and opposition players do tend to just ghost past him - potentially leading to 'chance created' for the opposition. So as a player he has to be marked down for that.

However, on the flip side when his is in our starting line up our 'chances created' numbers are significantly improved.

And it think that's how you have to think of James - on balance, does having him on the pitch (over a more ordinary player who is 'acceptable' both going forward and tracking back), over all lead to an increased number of Everton 'chances created' once you take the additional 'chances created' by the opposition his lack of tracking back lead to.

What we have to do, as a team, is maximise James's forward player whist minimise his defensive shortcomings. We do that and we win lots of games.

There will be frustrating games in which he plays - and we have just got to accept that sometimes. I just love seeing him in the team - :) He just make stuff happen.

On 25/01/2021 at 14:31, RuffRob said:

and forgot to mention - what an unselfish player he is. How many 'wild' shots do you see from him at the edge of the area? he always looking for somebody who might be in a better position before he thinks about pulling the trigger - he's so economical in what he does. forward players must love playing with him - make a run and he'll try his best to find you.

One 30 year old Colombian who did very little after a magnificent 6-8 game start with less than a year left on his contract wants to leave and that means the club have no ambition, why because they have allowed it or because they never begged him to stay. Is every player who’s left this club done so because the club has no ambition, I really don’t understand that argument that we are shit because we lack ambition, the money spent the managers changed show ambition, with poor decision making the club has invested heavily but we’ve had the wrong people making the decisions. Why are we less ambitious than Spurs West Ham Arsenal Chelsea Leicester Man City Man Utd or who ever you want to name why I don’t understand.

An ideal case study is looking at contractors, the resentment they can create is off the scale.  An unemotive attachment to the company, they don't feel bound by performance reviews, many carry an air of superiority because they are specialists.

I've worked in HR for near 20 years and can say with 100% certainty that the type of clear out Rafa is doing is a brilliant culture change.  I'm not saying James was a bad lad around the dressing room but I am saying with no doubt that having a part time player on those wages is not good for the collective. We were under the belief that James, Allan, Doucore was just the start and Koulibaily etc was following.

The situation is:-. His mentor manager decided to walk, James showed he wasn't arsed about the club by pissing off before the season ended and asking to be subbed then saying he was too tired to play.   We have financial problems and his second year could have triggered a 3rd year that we couldnt afford.

not sure why @Cornish Steve is quoting people recognising James skills when he as showed then, nobody doubts his talent.

Everybody is allowed to enjoy and comment on a players skill, just as they are allowed to comment of negative aspects. We all do it all the time - - everybody waxed lyrical about Townsends goal against Burnley we ALL enjoyed it and appreciated the skill and commented upon it - in a couple of months time he might get a slating if he is out of form and his shooting is all over the place.

Think its sad going back over 12 months in threads and picking out everybody's 'positive', but chose to ignore all negative one. What is the point?

I look at it this way, disregarding the Goalie if you had ten Rodriguez against ten Doucoure,  who do you think would win. James is a half decent player with the ball at his feet, but that's all there is to his game. Team Doucoure would win every time for me.

But that’s just never going to happen.
Like picking a team of strikers to play a team of defenders. Just not even a point.  😂

There is a reason a team is made up of players with different skills and abilities, it’s what makes the game.
