Wild theory - Gray hasn't been playing because Dyche has been training him up to be a striker. It's not the maddest idea seeing as he's our top scorer. Square pegs in round holes etc but anything is worth a try at this stage surely.

I actually thought that before….

Gray has far more trickery, guile and speed than Maupay. He's also taller. And has a finish. If Dyche isn't going to play Simms as a target man, and Maupay offers nothing, maybe he should look at a way of getting Gray in the box by playing him at CF. Simplify his game. Shoot on sight.

Not a wild theory. I thought it the week before and totally agree with you - it worked, as well. Gray is simply a far better footballer than Maupay.

It comes down to this: we are more likely to score with Gray on the field than on the bench. He plays.

Not to mention scoring on his return to the starting lineup. Penalty sure but with the importance of every goal very clear to everyone, he took it cool and calm. He just needs to start and should've been over Maupay since the second game.

No probably about it.

I paid close attention to Maupay in the warm-up against Villa and the lad could finish then. He was beating the keeper most times and slotting it into both corners.

I knew when it came to the game he'd fluff any chance and that's exactly what happened . He had a chance almost identical to what he'd been doing in the warm-up and hit it right at Martinez.

I watched him closely also, he was finishing really well in the practice, in the match shits the bed, surely it’s a confidence thing, a goal then some game time would do him the world of good.

I'd rather he stayed but he's been treated as a last resort by Dyche and he would command a decent fee.

Agreed, I think Dyche just went the 11 he trusted to the most to work hard. At the end of the day he trusted Gray on the final day when he had a couple of other options. Hope he stays as an impact sub or squad player.

Ahead of Maupay and Simms though, so I think it was still last resort

In fairness he's probably been one of the best value transfers we've had for a while.
Is he amazing? nope
could he stop trying to beat 3 players every time? yes
But for less than £2 million, he's scored a few goals in the hardest league in the world, in a shit team, and played out of position too.
Wish he would be more direct and beat his man (just the once) as he has the pace and ability to put defenders on the back foot. Much like ASM at Newcastle. Problem is he's also like ASM in that he's incredibly inconsistent to the point of infuriating.
Worth keeping, and its not like there's an orderly queue being formed anyway, so a moot point

Excellent post. 👏

We'd be daft to let him go in our current financial state.

I disagree - I don’t know if any prices are being banded about but say if a £15-20m bid came in, that’d pretty much all be profit so would give us some real wiggle room to get ‘specialist’ players in. I like Gray but he’s not going to play as a winger in a Dyche team and he’s an okay striker or 2nd striker in my opinion.

I think Silva is a manager who recognises players with abilities and wants to play football on the ground from back to front, so Fulham would be a great move for Gray and the money would help Dyche to buy a replacement who plays to his style because Gray definitely doesn’t fit what he wants from his players hard work before ability. So a good move for both teams and player if it comes off.

Profit to then gamble away though. I get the argument but when you then have to give chunks of that to agents for average players too, its wasted money.

Your right our success rate in the market has been pretty dire so all buys seem to be a bigger gamble with us than most, I personally rate Gray and if down to me would keep him and play him more. Our problem being I don’t really think Dyche sees him in the same way, so best to sell and get someone in Dyche rates than have 15mil or whatever he’s worth keeping the bench warm. Just another thought his wages are quite low compared to some others in the team so something to think about there if we sell and replace.
