For a very long time I loathed the idea of 3 CB's but now, after watching other competent teams do it well, it's not 3 CB's I loath it's 3 Everton CB's. Michael Keane has shown dozens of times now he cannot function in a back 3. I wonder if we could make it work with Godfrey Mina Branthwaite (holgate as cover). Godfrey and Branthwaite have both shown the ability to take the ball forward and are balanced right/left footed. Godfrey actually strikes me as perfect in a competent back 3. Leave Mina in the middle, he should never be trusted with the ball at his feet. It could also help Patterson and Mykolenko settle in. Gosh darnit would Digne have been perfect for this.

P.S. we've often used back 3/5 however you want to define it out of necessity, whether it be to cover for injuries or the manager thought it might help us tactically for a particular game. We've never committed to it over a long period. Hopefully doing so would solve us leaking goals. Big risk though in a relegations scrap.

Godfrey would be fine with his pace and aggressive tackling, I’ve not seen enough of Branthwaite to no how quick he is but if he does possess pace then it could work, stick Mina in the middle to direct with the other 2 doing the running.

I agree it's not a terrible formation if it's done right, under Rafa no only was it not done enough for the players to really settle with it but also we had so little of the ball that it just turned into a back 5 where we allowed them to push on further towards the goal than if we had an extra body in midfield.

The issue for me if someone came in and did this now is they would need to implement this very well and get us more on the ball than we were also to avoid it looking like the same mistake Rafa had with it.

Just done a bit more research and apparently he only plays 343 or 351, and hardly strays away from this.

If he comes here it sounds like this is the formation we will implement. Also likes a high press and developing youth players.

Also likes his outside CBs to carry the ball up the field and join the attack with the CM covering him, whilst pushing his wing backs high and wide.

Sounds like he's absolutely perfect for the players we already have... not.

Rafa would play 5 at the back and still have 2 wingers leaving nothing in the middle

I don't like 5 at the back for a few reasons. The first is that I think you need a quite specialist group of players to do it well. Keane is a no, Godfrey' positioning is all over the place so he is a no, Holgate is just a no and then that leave only Mina who I would only want as the central man.

Your full backs then need to provide all the width. If they arent very good with the ball then it doesnt really help nor if they dont push high enough because otherwise you have no width in the attacking third.

If you have no width in the attacking third, it makes it much easier to be marked and close things down.

You just have to look at Chelsea. Their two best wingbacks get injured and their pretty decent back-ups dont offer the same threat and all of a sudden they aren't as potent.

I also just generally dont see why you would want to play with three CBs? As a CB myself, why would you want to see a comparatively limited footballer that replacing an attacking player that can score and create goals?

Just to touch on that it's difficult to see how we fit Doucoure and Allan into a 343, as well as Keane. Gomes is the type of player I'd like to see in this style, but he's not up to scratch. I don't think Mina would be too unsuited to being an outside CB, as well as possibly Godfrey and I want to say Holgate, but I doubt it.

Also our wing backs are both untested, and Coleman is passed it now. Two positions I'd imagine which are quite important in this set up.

The 2 inside forwards do suit us though with a fully fit squad, Gray and Richarlison being a good fit there.

Overall I don't think our squad is suitable to that sort of set up to be honest. It doesn't seem like a sensible appointment.

Allan and Doucoure would pretty much the play the same as in the 442 but still struggle against a 3 man… CB’s would be Godfrey right, Mina central and hopefully Branthwaite on the left. If not I would see Grodfrey & Holgate wide with either Mina/Keane central. Whilst their ability is still suspect it would suit Patterson perfectly and from what I’ve seen Niels could be perfect for that.

I want to say having 3 Cb’s will help us defend corners but I just know we will still concede them

In fairness, they have acted quickly before the press can have all the world and its crap managers associated with the job. And actually I would consider Ranieri till the end of the season.

most managers sound good in tactical reviews but this is quite an interesting review of his Kovac's tactics

https://breakingthelines.com/tactical-analysis/tactical-analysis-niko-kovacs-monaco/

Obviously need to get it working with the players but like that he was also working with a very young squad, hopefully another that would be keen to make use of our young talents

We'd be doing very well to get Kovac.  It's him or Favre for mine.  Both of them are polyglots as well.

Only concern with Kovac is whether he can save a sinking ship (halfway through a season), whereas Favre has done it previously.  Think Kovac is probably the better long term option though.

Kovac is supposed to be an extreme disciplinarian. How are the players going to cope with this? Also read that he is looking for a 'better' job and is quite will to wait until the summer. I suppose we will just throw the last of any money at him.

With Rafa only being 6months in to a 3 year £7m per year contract, I am guessing a good chuck of the Digne money will now be spent on outgoing manager compensation and incoming manager wages.

Fixed it for you. 😂

Choose your attitude choose your behaviour.  Look at the behaviour to assess the attitude.

a player can play crap…. That’s the behaviour….. that player could be Dennis straq…., you can’t question his attitude, he’s been crap cos he’s not good enough.  The other player could be Andre Gomes who just let a player run past him and we concede… that’s a shit attitude

Doesn’t require fixing Steve, just requires you to understand. 😜
